How to engage students in a lesson

I think that teachers need to think about one question when they make a lesson plan, "So what?"  The teacher needs to make the lesson relevant to student's lives or else they won't care to learn it.  They need to be able to see why you are teaching this lesson to them and draw connections with real life situations; otherwise what you are teaching them would be useless.  I am sure we've all thought this before.

I completely agree. How many times did we do or not do for that matter, something as kids because we saw no point in it. I see this now when I don't want my son to shortcut some type of chore around the house. I try to go ahead and explain my reasoning. Hopefully it will make a difference. In all we have to do our best to try to connect the information to the learner, but I am also a believer in honesty and sometimes we may just have to say, look we have to learn this, I promise a little later it will make sense.
